VDI
Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI)
Coming Soon
The Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) delivers a secure and persistent Windows desktop environment that can be accessed from a web browser. The VDI comes pre-loaded with useful software for data analytics and has connections to IRB folders and research servers. It is on the Loyola “secure” network and is appropriate for work with sensitive data such as Protected Health Information (PHI). It is considered a “persistent” environment because each user gets their own virtual desktop and can save files and settings between sessions. It can only be accessed from an internal Loyola enterprise network connection. This means it can be accessed while on campus or while using the Loyola Secure Access VPN from off-campus.

Resource available to the following users:
Use of the VDI is available to all Loyola University Chicago faculty participating in IRB approved research and their research team.
Users will only have access to the IRB folders for IRB approved studies they are on.
Requests for VDI access require:
- Please request access to the VDI in the ITS Service Portal. The form needs to be submitted by a faculty or staff person with University (LUC) credentials.
- Users without an LUC ID will need to first have a Non-Affiliated Persons (NAP) account created for them. This includes users who only have a Trinity account. Faculty or staff with LUC credentials can request a NAP account for the research team member in the ITS Service Portal.

How do I install additional software, packages, and libraries?

- cran.rstudio.com
- cran.r-project.org
For all other software, please submit a request to the ITS Service Desk for review.
Why is the VDI taking a long time to load?
The first time you log-in, please expect a longer load time of several minutes since the system needs to build your profile. Subsequent log-ins should reduce to about 30 seconds.
Why can’t I access the internet?
The VDI is on the Loyola “secure” network and so does not have direct access to the internet. If there is a software tool or package you need, please submit a request to the ITS Service Desk.
