Black History Month Recognition Resolution

"The goal of this legislation is to make Black History Month an official celebration within SGLC and we are hosting our first Black History Month event at the end of February."

Black History Month is a time that calls for the celebration of all the wonderful things that black people have done for society. While Loyola has several events for Black History Month put on by the Black Cultural Center, it saddened me to hear that Loyola does not yet recognize Black History Month. With the black student population only being 5.45%, it is important that as a university, we celebrate the accomplishments of black people and black students at Loyola.

This piece of legislation highlights important facts about black student life at Loyola, particularly highlighting The Black Cultural Center (BCC). The BCC on campus strives to make Black History Month at Loyola a celebratory time. They host special events such as open mic nights and an Ebony Ball, along with a plethora of engagement opportunities for black students on campus. This legislation also emphasizes the work of Dr. Carter G. Woodson, and the Presidents of the United States of America by coining February as Black History Month. The goal of this legislation is to make Black History Month an official celebration within SGLC and we are hosting our first Black History Month event at the end of February.

As one of the 5.45% of black students at Loyola, it was a true honor to be able to work on this legislation alongside CEDIO Taylor Thomas. In addition to celebrating Black History Month within SGLC, we hope to one day be able to celebrate Black History Month as a whole university, which is why we will continue to urge Loyola to make Black History Month a campus wide holiday to celebrate the accomplishments of black people everywhere.
