HIPAA Information
Policies Procedures and Guidelines for Protecting Health Information
These policies, procedures, and guidelines are intended to ensure that Personally Identifiable Health Information (PHI) obtained during the conduct of a Loyola University Chicago research study is maintained and transmitted with appropriate measures to protect privacy of research subjects.
In addition, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) of 1996 and subsequent regulations published by the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) impose restrictions on other institutions* which may be covered under the Act with respect to their relationships with Loyola. Loyola University Chicago may, in conducting research in collaboration with one of these institutions, be required to comply with certain aspects of HIPAA as well as the Illinois Personal Information Protection Act (IPIPA) in the conduct of human subject research activities.
Although Loyola University Chicago is not a Covered Entity as defined in the HIPAA privacy regulations, the University's policies and procedures, which govern the privacy rights of its research participants are compatible with those required by HIPAA for Covered Entities, and are standard for research activities involving PHI.
