Week 4 (Oct 26 - 30): The Future of Connected Devices and Your Data is Valuable, Protect It

The Future if Internet Connected Devices*

As technology around the Internet of Things (IoT), we have to educate ourselves even more and be careful of what we are connecting to our home network and how we secure these devices.  As technological innovations change rapidly, we can look to several trends and predictions that will be changing our world. 

In this decade we will see tremendous growth of our digital lives.

  • 63 million American homes will qualify as smart homes by 2022 using internet connected devices such as thermostats light bulbs security systems and appliances.1
  • The average consumer will own around 15 connected devices by 2030.2
  • 70% of light duty vehicles and trucks will be connected to the internet by 2023.3
  • Experts forecast that 5G will reach 45% of the world's population by the end of 2024 enabling instantaneous access to billions of devices.4
  • 5G will enhance connections of all your devices whether it's a smartphone smart home smart car or the smart city you live in.

As technologies evolve so will the behaviors and tactics of cyber criminals cyber criminals will take advantage of increased consumer and business reliance upon connected devices. Every one of us needs to be prepared and be smart about what we're connecting and how we use our devices creating a security culture today will help us combat threats of tomorrow.

The most common awareness topic next to phishing is passwords.  Having a strong password is your first line of defence in account protection.  

The Cyber Security Alliance has a great video on passwords in the workplace, but it applies to personal passwords as well.
