Turnitin

reviewing documents

Turnitin is a service used as part of an effort to uphold academic integrity by checking student submissions against other works within Loyola University Chicago, other Turnitin subscribed institutions, publications, and public content associated with the Turnitin database. Submissions that are reviewed against the Turnitin database will generate a Similarity Report with a score and details in respect to its similarity to other existing content. Through this process, Turnitin detects possible attempts of plagiarism in student submissions.

Getting Started

The Turnitin Similarity checker is built into the Sakai Assignments tool for use in reviewing written (text-based) course submissions from students.

To enable Turnitin for an assignment, simply check the box to Use Turnitin when creating an assignment folder. For detailed instructions on this process, visit our inline documentation article.

As students submit to a Sakai assignment folder with Turnitin enabled, Turnitin will generate a report that indicates the approximate percentage of original content within a submission. Please note that a Turnitin report takes some time to process and reports will not be immediately available upon submission.

Turnitin is available in any Sakai course site Assignments tool and does not require a special request.

Turnitin AI Writing Detection Pilot

As of April 2023, Turnitin launched their AI Writing Detection Tool as part of the Turnitin Feedback Studio for all currently subscribing institutions. Since its launch, Loyola University Chicago has the Turnitin AI Writing Detection tool enabled for an initial pilot period, set to be reviewed for continued adoption by the Academic Operations Group at the end of the Fall 2023 academic term.

Presently, the AI Writing Detection score is only viewable within Turnitin Feedback Studio, and its accuracy still appears to be in development. ITRS encourages faculty interested in using the AI Writing Detection feature as a conversation starter about AI authoring tools and their use in academic contexts, rather than as a definitive indication of AI use.

Please reference the Provost's Statement on Academic Integrity and Use of Artificial Intelligence and Loyola University Chicago's Academic Integrity standards to guide your conversations with students and teaching with AI.

For more information on the Turnitin AI Writing Detection tool, visit their AI Writing page.

As a reminder, ITRS does not approve or decide on the adoption of instructional technologies at Loyola; this decision-making authority is within the Academic Operations Group, a representative body that reviews proposals and concerns regarding new academic technologies. While ITRS will provide consultations on how to use the Turnitin AI Writing Detection tool or other academic technologies, please direct inquiries and requests for adoption to AOG.
